Teething can be a painful and irritating time in your little one’s life. As exciting as it is to watch your baby grow up and get his or her first teeth, it can also take a toll on you.
Babies tend to be more fussy and whiny when their first teeth are coming through. It is said that the first teeth are the most painful because the baby has never experienced this sensation before.
My little one just got her first two teeth last week. Here are some signs she exhibited that let me know the teeth were coming:
- More fussy than usually for no apparent reason. (She had a clean diaper and was well-fed.)
- Desire to put EVERYTHING in her mouth
- Rubbing soft objects across her gums as fast as she could
- Sucking on her bottom lip
- producing lots of extra saliva and drooling
Once I realized what was going on, I immediately started researching some options to help make this teething process easier for her, me, and hubby.
When I went to the store, the only options I saw for teething remedies were plastic teething toys. I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want is to have my 6 month old baby sucking on plastic for long periods of time. Just thinking about all of the toxins she would be ingesting gave me eebie geebies.
Also, what’s that blue liquid inside of the toys?!
So I opted for some more natural solutions. After experimenting with a few different things, here’s what finally worked best.
Sophie the Giraffe
This rubber toy is so cute and it’s easy to grasp for my little one’s tiny hands. She can pick Sophie up herself, chew on her for long periods of time. This is so much better than her chewing on random things like my cell phone or the remote control. I can keep Sophie clean. This teether is also made out of natural rubber so I don’t have to worry about my baby ingesting nasty chemicals. Sophie also makes a noise that keeps my little one’s attention. So in addition to soothing her gums, Sophie keeps her busy and entertained.
Frozen Apple Slices
Any fruit will work for soothing teething gums. I chose apples because if my little one digest a little bit, I know it will be easy on her digestive system. Unlike plastic and other artificial teethers, apples are real food. When cutting the fruit up, just make sure you cut it into pieces big enough so that your baby does not swallow it, but small enough for them to pick up themselves. The first time, you may want to sit with your baby while he gnaws on the fruit to make sure the size is appropriate and safe.
Chamomilla Homeopathic Remedy
Homeopathy is a great alternative to harsh drugs and pharmaceuticals. They are 100 percent natural and created in very small doses, which makes them perfect for children and babies. I gave my little one one small dose of chamomilla and it seems to help with the pain and put her in a very relaxed mood. This remedy is perfect for when she’s experiencing pain late a night. Chamomilla helps her sleep.
My new book is available on Amazon! I’m very excited about it. It’s full of mommy wisdom that will improve the lives of mommies around the world. Check it out.
