People are usually shocked when I tell them that so of course I tell people all of the time! lol! Many people have asked, “What happened to her?” They assume that chiropractors “fix” backs that have already been injured. But that type of sickness care is not really healthcare.
For me, healthcare is caring for and maintaining your health while you are well. Not simply waiting for something to happen to you in order to take care of yourself.
So for Skye, I want to teach her the value of real self care. So nothing is “wrong” with her. We take her to the chiropractor to keep her well.
She actually went to the chiropractor before we took her to a naturopathic pediatrician. This was mostly because I believed chiropractic training was more beneficial to Skye than allopathic medicine. The central nervous system is so important to the immune system. It also plays an important role in the mind, body connection which develops rapidly in newborns. So it was more important to keep this system working optimally.
We were lucky to find a chiropractor who specializes is pediatric and post and pre-natal chiropractic care. In fact, I first learned about the chiropractor when I was pregnant with Skye. Her chiro specializes in the Webster technique, which helps turn breech babies. So I was putting together a list of resources just in case this became an issue late in my pregnancy.
Fortunately, it was not an issue. So it wasn’t until one of my massage clients who recently had a baby recommended Dr. Danielle and Midtown Family Chiropractic and Wellness Center that I took Skye to see her.
I thought I was taking Skye to the chiropractor as a preventative measure for wellness. I didn’t actually expect her to NEED an adjustment!
Dr. Danielle then explained that coming through the birth canal can cause misalignments. She’s adjust babies hours after their birth. Apparently being born is stressful stuff. Chiropractic care can also help with colic, ear infections, and general cold and flu.
So with some pops and cracks, Skye’s spine was back in business. JUST KIDDING!
Babies only need soft, very light adjustment. It’s not like grownup adjustments at all. A great thing about Skye’s pediatric chiropractor is she is use to working with A LOT of babies. We’ve seen 5 or 6 babies in her office at a time. So she works great with kids. She’s patient, attentive, and fun. She hugs, kisses, coos, plays, and smiles before, during, and after each adjustment. So Skye just thinks she’s getting a lot of attention. She doesn’t even notice the adjustment.
Dr. Danielle also has a Kid’s Corner with toys and games. So while Hubby and I were getting adjusted, Skye was playing with another child. However, the playing came to an end when Skye abruptly bit her little play mate. But after we explained Skye thinks biting is kissing, she was quickly forgiven and the playing resumed.
While sitting in the waiting room, we also get to commune with other like-minded parents. We’ve talked about everything from cloth diapering to water births and alternate vaccination schedules. It’s like a holistic parent hangout!
So we take her once a month now. I mean think about it. They’re learning to move their heads, sit up, crawl, pull up, walk. They’re even falling sometimes. As if this stress isn’t enough, they’re also growing at record speed. They grow faster in the first year than they ever will again in life. So their bodies need some support and positive encouragement to stay in balance.
I think it’s an amazing thing to teach babies the importance of maintaining balance in their bodies, especially since I spend most of my time as a massage therapist teaching adults who never learned how to do this.
“Children who receive regular chiropractic care have been demonstrated to have less colds, ear infections and flu. The best time to start is when the child is an infant. Their spines and necks can become very easily misaligned.” ~ Debbie Nicholson
Not only did this appointment benefit Skye. I learned a lot! My own ignorance about babies and stress was corrected. I now see the light and will continue to teach Skye how important self care is in life.
