What is your idea of a great family? What’s that image you’ve been carrying around in your head and pops up everything you even think of the word family?
Maybe it’s your family and maybe it’s something you saw on television because your family is dysfunctional.
Whatever that image is, put it aside. Try to understand great families are built. They don’t just spontaneously happen.
It takes work, commitment, and constant effort to create a close connection between people even if they are family. Blood and DNA does not create a close knit family. Love isn’t even enough. Consistent actions of love and commitment is what makes peoria come together as a family.
Prioritize the people who are close to you. Never expect just your words or presence to be great. Those are just enough but far from great. Go the extra mile for your family like you would a customer, a lover you’re trying to impress, or a company you want to work for.
Consciously choose your family by creating sacred space for them and doing thoughtful gestures. Because at the end of the day, they people driven by basic human needs: to be loved, cared for, and made to feel special.
Don’t just commit to doing this when it’s easy. Do it when it’s hard, awkward, when they get on your. Nerves or disappoint you. And don’t do it once in a while. Do it often.
