Does that shock you? In America, where we have so many choices, opportunities, and freedoms, we choose to live lifestyles that kill us.
Here are the top three causes of death in the US:
1. Heart Disease
Current Studies and Scientific Research is finally agreeing with what the alternative health field has been saying for years: a major contributing factor to these diseases is stress.
Stress isn’t just when you get frustrated emotionally, burned out mentally, and start yearning for a vacation. Stress also has real physiological effects on the body. It literally breaks down your body’s ability to function. Every instance of stress you experience — mental, emotional, and physical — builds on the previous, until your body is systematically destroying itself.
Don’t get me wrong, all stress is not bad. In fact, stress was designed to be a signifier that change was necessary to maintain balance. However, many of us consistently put our stress signals on hold to endure one more day at work, complete one more errand, finish that last paper, etc.
Our symptoms are no longer signs that we need to rest, regroup, slow down, or change. They are inconveniences we must endure as we continue to overburden our lives with doing, going, and giving.
What’s the solution to this overwhelming problem?
Spend some time each day dedicated to yourself. I’ve spoken to both conventional and holistic health care providers, from western doctors to acupuncturist, massage therapist to psychologists. And they’ve all stressed that the majority of the cases they see on a daily basis involve self-neglect. We wait until our symptoms become unbearable, and then we hand ourselves over to an “expert” to “fix” us.
But how did we get so out of balance in the first place? Everyone and everything comes first; Work, Kids, Spouse, Social Obligations, Home, etc. Health should not be viewed as just one aspect of your life, it is the foundation. Without it, you cannot function in these other roles.
So start treating yourself and your life like your number one priority.
