Maybe you have and you said to yourself, “that’s a weird place for a maze!”
Well you were right about one thing, it would be a weird place for a maze, but it’s not a maze; it’s a labyrinth.
Labyrinths are circles that you can walk through to get to the center of the circle. This ancient greek symbol is a physical representation of the journey one takes in life. As we live, our experiences, positive and negative, are intended to take us to the center of our subconscious.
The difference between a labyrinth and a maze is that while a labyrinth is designed to take you to the center, a maze is a physical representation of confusion and unfocused thought. Labyrinths are only shaped like circles. A maze can be in whatever shape its creator can dream up.
Walking a labyrinth may seem pretty simple to the unknowing eye, but it is a highly spiritual ritual. When done correctly, it is a form of walking meditation. As you walk the labyrinth, you walk deeper into your own thoughts. As you move through the labyrinth you take deep breaths and reflect on what you would like to see happen in your life. The walk of the labyrinth winds down until you get closer and closer to the center of the labyrinth, which also symbolizes the center of yourself — a place of peace. The only way to get out of the labyrinth is by following the path in which you came.
As you make the walk out of the labyrinth, you are more enlighten about who you are and where you want to go. You have more information about how to deal with your life and the decisions you make. When you exit the labyrinth, you are more centered and balanced than when you went in.
The most important part of labyrinths is the intention you hold as you are walking. Intention is also the most important part of our lives. The intentions and visions we have for ourselves leads us as we journey through life. Although there may be distractions while walking the labyrinth, just as there are in life, your main focus should be on holding tight to your intention. Don’t let your mid wonder. The more you can focus, the more energy you will generate, and the greater your possibility of manifesting your intention.
Now a maze is quite the opposite of a labyrinth. In a maze, you do not have a deliberate direction. You just walk until you find your way out. Unlike the labyrinth there may be several ways out of the maze. Having multiple ways out may bring on confusion about your new location or where to go next.
Walking through a maze represents how most people live their lives. Many people live with no purpose or direction but allow life to lead them as they stumble to find their way out.
Learning to walk a labyrinth can help you focus on the direction you want to take in life and get you started on your journey. A labyrinth should be respected as a spiritual place just like a church or place of worship. Just as people seek a church for spiritual direction, a labyrinth is also sought out for spiritual guidance and direction.
So the next time you see a big circle in a park or a field, don’t think it’s a maze or a crop circle. Think of it as a journey or portal into the core of who you are. Life should really be like walking through a labyrinth, and NOT a maze.
