Being pregnant with #2, I want to make sure my body is as healthy as possible to support me and baby during pregnancy. Nutritionally, this is a very important time for the baby. He or she is growing so rapidly and during pregnancy, you are building the foundation of their health for the rest of their lives.
But the truth is, the decisions you make during pregnancy are important to your baby. Don’t stress about it. But do understand the importance of your decisions and make empowered choices for you and baby.
I eat very well during pregnancy. However, I know our food and soil aren’t what they use to be. Even if we eat all organic, natural foods, they still lack the nutrients they did 10, 20, an 30 years ago. So for me, vitamins are just extra insurance that I’m getting everything my body needs to be healthy and my baby needs to grow. If you don’t know a lot about vitamins in general, you may want to start with my article, How to choose the right vitamins. It has lots of helpful information.
So here’s what I’m taking right now.
Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal Vitamin
This is the best prenatal vitamin hands down! It is a while food supplement. So the vitamin is made with real food. Be careful of synthetic vitamins. They are toxic, especially during pregnancy. Just a hint, most vitamins you find in a normal grocery store are synthetic meaning the body does not recognize them. So read you vitamin bottles and make sure they indicate that they are whole food vitamins. These prenatals give me plenty of energy. they also make my hair and nails grow like crazy. In the first trimester, they helped with nausea. These vitamins contain everything you need for a healthy pregnancy like folic acid, iron, calcium, vitamin D, B-complex, and more. It even includes herbs like ginger for morning sickness. These vitamins are raw, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free. I started taking them 3 months before we actually conceived to prepare by body for pregnancy and I can’t recommend them enough. They’re awesome!
I usually buy my vitamins from wholefoods, but amazon also carries it. Here’s a link to it: Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal Vitamin.
Wild Reishi Mushroom
Herbs are typically not recommended during pregnancy. Not because they’re not vitally important to you and your growing baby, but because our medical system and doctors have not studied them enough to be comfortable with recommending them for pregnancy. However, other countries and cultures’s medical systems have used herbs to support healthy pregnancy for centuries. Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine both use herbal medicine during pregnancy. So I feel completely comfortable using them. You’ll have to decide for yourself.
An herbalist recommended reishi mushroom to me during pregnancy and lactation. He told me that reishi mushroom helps strengthen the spiritual nature and sense of self of a child. The longer one takes it, the more beneficial it is. This herb also strengthens the heart beat of the baby. I starting taking it right away. I had a prenatal visit with my midwife right after I started taking reishi. When we listened to the baby’s heartbeat, she remarked how strong the heart beat was! She said, “This baby has a really strong heart!” I was ecstatic. I continued taking the herb. During labor, which lasted about 30 hours, my blood pressure remained steady and both my heart beat and the baby’s heart rate remained strong the entire time. A drop in the baby’s heart rate usually leads to a c-section. So this is so important. This is one of the most important herbs I take during pregnancy!
This is also available on amazon. Dragon Herbs is one of the best brands of reishi mushroom. Very potent! Here’s a link to it. Dragon Herbs Wild Reishi Mushroom.
Iron Blood Builder
I tend to be anemic during pregnancy so I supplement with extra iron. This seems to keep my iron levels at pretty good levels. This Mega Food Blood Builder is also a whole food supplement so the iron is organic and digestible. Synthetic iron is very hard on the liver and digestive system and can be toxic during pregnancy. So make sure you’re taking organic iron for best benefits. In general, Megafood is a good supplement company.
Foti is a great supplement for brain development for my baby. This is the main reason I take it. It also keeps my brain nice and healthy and keeps me regular. I took foti during the conception of both of my babies. It is an aphrodisiac and increases fertility. Foti is also great for increasing energy during pregnancy. It helps support me during the day while I’m running behind a busy toddler. Keeping energy levels up during pregnancy is really important when you already have a little one to chase after and don’t have the luxury of lying in bed every chance you get.
Here’s a link to the foti that I take: Foti. It’s is also available at wholefoods.
Magnesium with Vitamin B6
These are two very important but often overlooked vitamins during pregnancy! Magnesium helps balance the increased calcium absorption and keeps muscles supple and flexible. The best thing about magnesium is it helps with morning sickness. So does Vitamin B6!! They reduce nausea and morning sickness. It’s best to start taking them before pregnancy, but they also provide relief when taken during pregnancy too! The nice thing is they supplement each other. Magnesium increases the absorption of Vitamin B6.
Here’s the brand I take. Magnesium with Vitamin B6. You can also buy this at wholefoods.
If I add any more vitamins to the list, I’ll keep you posted. But so far, this combination is giving me everything I feel I need right now!
