If you asked me which I preferred, I would say “stillness,” but then I would proceed to give you reasons, excuses, and challenges outside of myself that prevented me from being still as much as I desired to.
The truth is in my thoughts I loved the idea of stillness, but in my actions, I was all about bussyness.
When I was relaxing then I wasn’t producing, performing, or creating. I didn’t really believe these two things could co-exist. So I chose a lifestyle that prevented me from being still.
When I was a kid, this was no problem. I was resilient and I bounced back easy. But as I got older and became more interested in my health, I realized there was a connection between those pesky colds, flus, & illnesses and my lack of rest and relaxation.
If there’s one thing you can’t deny the body, it’s rest, and believe me I know. No herb, ginseng juice, green tea, or coffee extract will keep you going if your body and mind are screaming for much needed tlc.
Even some of the greatest people in history took time to recharge with self care. Jesus meditated and fasted. Gandhi took time for personal reflection and journaling. Buddha sat under the bodhi tree to meditate.
All three seemed to come out of long periods of deep reflection and meditation with not only a recharged mind and body, but a recharged sense of purpose and dedication to their mission.
The key to being more productive on 6-8 hours of sleep and at least 5 minutes of self care a day is to use the creative and imaginary faculties of your mind, namely your intuition. That way, when you do act, it will be from a place of inspiration and insight and not expiration and exhaustion.
