Smell Your Way to Happiness

  • bergamot essential oil

stressed girl1 Smell Your Way to HappinessHave you ever felt angry or frustrated at work? Every day, we encounter so many stress triggers in the office, like company politics, project deadlines, demanding bosses, and irritable customers and coworkers.

It’s no wonder on-the-job stress is the biggest complaint from U.S. workers, according to a recent poll conducted by Gallup.com.

Considering that many of us spend over half of our waking hours at work, 8 hrs/day, 40 hrs/week, 160  hrs/month, and 1920/year, it seems important that we figure out how to make the whole work experience a little more joyful.

Up until now, I’ve advocated self care first thing in the morning or last thing before you go to bed. Now, I want to share with you a self care activity that you can actually do during the day at work to diffuse anger, stress, and frustration.

So before, you throw that stapler at your coworker’s head or yell out those offensive words to your boss that you’ve been keeping to yourself, try this self care activity! You’ll feel so much better once you do. You may not remember what was bothering you to begin with.

Essential Oil: Bergamot

bergamot essential oil Smell Your Way to HappinessEssential oils are a highly concentrated liquid distilled from plants. These oils contains the “essence” of the plants and is the key component to alternative healing methods like aromatherapy.

Essential oils have been used for centuries due to their medicinal properties.

Bergamot oil has a very sweet and fruity scent. As soon as you inhale this oil, you immediately feel your mood lift, inspiration increase, and any signs of anger, frustration, and stress disappear.

The components of Bergamot Oil, like alpha pinene and limonene, are anti depressants. They give a refreshing feeling of joy, happiness, and increased energy when you feel depressed or burned out.

The flavonoids present in Bergamot oil are very good relaxants . They soothe nerves and reduce nervous tension, anxiety, and stress. (for more info, visit organicfacts.net or read The Aromatherapy Bible: The Definitive Guide to Using Essential Oils)

4 ways to use Bergamot oil

You can purchase bergamot oil at your local health food store in the vitamins and supplements section. You can also order it online. (Here’s a link to my favorite brand.)

Always keep a small bottle of bergamot oil on or near your desk so you have it for a de-stress, pick me up.

Here are 4 ways you can use bergamot oil when you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

1. Put 2 drops of the oil in your hands, rub your hands together, place your hands over your nose, and take 3 very deep breaths.

2. Place a drop of bergamot oil in each of the following areas: on each wrist, behind each ear, and on your temples on each side of your forehead. Not only are you surrounding yourself with the scent, you’re also allowing it to stimulate certain acupressure points, which will help lift your mood.

3. Place 5-10 drops of bergamot oil into 8 oz. carrier oil like almond or olive oil or shea butter and keep it on your desk. You can massage the mixture into your hands for 3-5 minutes. The massage part of this procedure is especially important as it helps the oil to absorb into your skin and blood steam. Once the oil enters the body, it continues to calm the central nervous system and assist in the production of happy hormones. As a added bonus, it also softens the skin.

4. Put 25 drops of bergamot oil and 8 oz. of water in a spray bottle to make a room spray. Use this spray liberally in your cube to lighten up the atmosphere. Your coworkers may even get a whiff, and before you know it, the whole office will have a more positive attitude!
