I was ecstatic, but I didn’t have any milk pumped. So I began pumping the day before and nothing was really coming out. I was stumped so I started drinking tons of water and taking vitamins to up my milk supply. I would wait a few hours and then try again, and still nothing.
I remembered reading that fenugreek really helps with increasing milk supply so I had some empty pill capsules and fenugreek powder. So I made my own fenugreek supplements.
I took three pills, and 30 minutes later I took 3 more. So I took 6 fenugreek pills total. About two hours later, I pumped and I expressed so much milk. The picture on the right is 6 ounces of pumped milk from one side. I haven’t pumped this much since those first few weeks post birth. Now we’re 8 months in and my supply doesn’t seem to be as high, but the fenugreek powder made a huge difference. I’m taking the pills regularly now to make sure my supply stays high for feeding and pumping for those days when I need a break.
I know there are a lot of ideas and advice floating around about what works for increasing milk supply, and I’ve tried everything from eating tons of oatmeal to drinking several cups of mother’s milk tea, and while I think these are great options for the long run, fenugreek works the fastest for when you need to pump milk quickly.
How to Make Your Own Fenugreek Powder Pills
Scoop the powder into the pill capsule. And repeat for as many pills as you want
There’s fancy equipment you can buy that makes it easier to fill more capsules at a time. But this process worked for me. As I make more pills, I’ll probably invest in something a little more upscale.
If you’re looking to boost your milk production, fenugreek may be the way to go.
