I love making my own Shea Butter Cream. Sure, you can buy it in the store, but there’s no telling what you’re going to get.
Sometimes I buy shea butter from the same company, but from one batch to the next, it differs in consistency and effectiveness.
So now, I prefer to buy shea butter in bulk from my local coop store and make my own cream to use on skin and hair. In fact, I don’t even use lotion anymore.
Back in the day, I loved Jergens and Nivea, until I realized that a lot of the ingredients like mineral oil was stripping my skin of vital nutrients and making my eczema worse. So I started researching skin moisturizers that are actually good for the skin. That’s when I really discovered shea butter.
Sure, I’d heard of it before than, but didn’t how just how great it was for the skin. Once I knew, I started meeting people who used shea butter exclusively on their skin, and they had the most beautiful and young looking skin, EVER! That was enough for me. I was sold on the idea of tossing my lotions and switching to shea butter full-time.
When I told a coworker about my decision, she grimaced, saying, “But it takes so long to put it on in the morning. I don’t have time for that. I just use it on the weekends.”
I’ll have to admit, it was a lot more involved in massage shea butter into my skin than slathering on some lotion. But for me, my skin, and the eczema, it was well worth it. The shea butter alone significantly reduced the irritation of my skin from eczema. It was amazing. I haven’t used lotion for over 10 years.
However, instead of buying it, I make my own now. I love making my own because I can make it into a really soft consistency that’s easy to massage into my skin without having to use so much effort. I can also add any scents, essential oils, and other yummy ingredients that really nourish my skin and give it that fabulous glow.
Here is what I used in my most recent batch of shea butter. But be creative. There are so many oils, butters, and other ingredients you can use in your shea butter. Try to create a specific combination for your skin’s needs and based on your individual preferences.
Here are the items I used.
- 1 cup raw shea butter
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 3 TB aloe vera
- 3 TB castor oil
- 5 drops of essential oil (choose a fragrance you like or one with good skin care properties like lavender or tea tree oil)
The first thing you need to do is put your shea butter in a clean glass jar. I love to use mason jars to store my shea butter. Actually…I use mason jars for everything!
Next, boil a pot of water. Once it starts boiling, turn off the stove and place the glass jar in the pot of hot water. This is the best way to melt the shea butter.
Just a quick note, I never use the microwave to melt my shea butter. It changes the nutritional value of the shea butter and kills some of the nutrients. So I go through the extra step to use hot water instead of electromagnetic radiation.
It usually takes the shea butter about 15 minutes to completely melt. So take some time to gather the other ingredients while you wait.
Once the shea butter melts, the real fun can began.
Start adding the coconut oil, castor oil, aloe vera, and essential oils. Stir and mix the ingredients together. Then, allow it to sit and it will naturally solidify.
If you like really soft and creamy shea butter, add more coconut oil and aloe vera. These ingredients both soften the shea butter. Don’t be afraid to experiment. You can always melt the shea butter again and add more ingredients to adjust the final product.

In addition to softening and nurturing the skin, this recipe can really save you some money $$$.
When I use to buy cosmetic shea butter in the store, I’d spend $5-$8 for only 8 oz. Now, I buy the shea butter in bulk from my local coop store. For $20, I get a huge block of shea butter that last for an entire year!
So it pays to make your own.
