It’s probably not a surprise to you that any repeated physical movements we do in our lifetime affects our muscles. For example, if you sit at a computer 8 hours a day, 5 days a week without the proper posture, your shoulders, neck, or low back may began to hold a Chronic Stress Pattern.
Here’s an exercise I want you to try. Think of something that worries, upsets, angers, scares, hurts, or stresses you out in any way. It can be an old memory, an act (like someone cutting you off in traffic), or a person (someone who gets on your nerves). Really get into the moment and feel the emotion as it is happening right now. Once you feel it at its peak stop and take stock of how you feel not just emotionally but physically too.
Are your shoulders hunched up? Neck tight? Is your head protruded forward? This is an emotional response to something outside of you, but as you can see it is having a very detrimental effect on the inside of you.
Not only does it affect our muscles, but as Dr. Harold Bloomfield explains,”Unresolved emotional pain wreaks havoc on your immune system, cardiac function, hormone levels, and other physical functions.
Our bodies are so powerful that you don’t even have to be in a real life situation for your body to respond. All you have to do is think about, remember, or imagine a memory or event that was stressful, and your body remembers these emotions and stores them in your muscles. However, be careful not to suppress painful events or memories since this will cause the negative emotions associated with the events/memories to be store in your body as well. Instead, actively work on reconstructing and working through these issues.
Just as our lives show the habits of our thoughts, beliefs, and actions, so does our bodies. So pay attention to your emotional health. Stop spending time worrying about the past or fearing the future.
If you experienced a trauma that you think is stored in your body’s memory, work with a qualified mental health professional or bodywork specialist — try someone who specializes in reiki.
