A mantra is a sound or series of sounds repeated to align the mind and body to a singular focus.
People use mantras to produce all sorts of results and transformations in their lives. Some people use them to increase spiritual awareness, while others seek physical abundance. Mantras can be chanted for world peace, or to remove personal obstacles.
Mantras have been used for centuries. Although they are popular in buddhism and hinduism, no one is 100 percent sure where they originated. Mantras have been traced to Vedic tradition in India, but there also is evidence that ancient cultures including hebrews and egyptians used mantras as well.
Despite their religious affaffiliations, you do not have to belong to a certain religion to use mantras. They are a cross-religious and cross-cultural tool that can help you make major changes in your life.
There are a couple of mantras you may already be familiar with.
The sound “om” or “aum” is popular in many yoga mantras, and it is the sound of completion. This is a great mantra to chant if you need to heal physically or emotionally or if you are chanting for someone else’s healing.
“Ah” is another sound often used in mantras. This is the sound of creation. In Christianity, the ah mantra is used to end prayers in order to create whatever results we have just prayed about. When one says, “Amen” after a prayer, one is saying a mantra.
The concept of words having power is very prevalent in Christianity. In fact, a well known verse of the bible states, “In the beginning is the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)
God and sound are synonymous. Therefore, mantra and chanting is a powerful way to focus on the power of God and the power within ourselves. We can create anything we want in our lives and mantra is an empowering way to focus on our desires and reveal the strength within ourselves to overcome any obstacles standing in between us and our desires.
